reduced options
We have bought a number of senior passes for England over the past 5 years or so - recently the option to extend the pass into a second month was removed and now the "extra day" promotion has been deleted. These passes are very convenient and are very useful as they are flexible however the reduced options has us looking at advanced fare purchases instead. Disappointing!

England Pass v London +
The London + Pass is poor value compared to the England Pass not only on basic maths especially for youths & seniors but also because of this. Firstly no way should you travel standard class. These passes in 1st class are such good value they make us Brits drool. Think on this, travelling in 1st class is just a bit more expensive but on Virgin Trains & East Coast you get free breakfast & dinner. [Note Virgin takes over the East Coast train franchise Mar 1st 2015 so it should vastly improve.] Example take an early train King's Cross to York with B/F. Then train it to Manchester to catch an evening Pendolino to Euston with dinner included. You just saved dinner & breakfast in the hotel.

Good Value
My husband and I travelled around England with a 2 month 15 Day England Flexi Pass, Standard Class while we were there for 35 days Sept./Oct. We found it very practical and easy to use our passes. We would simply decide a day or two ahead where and when we wanted to travel and then arrive at the train station, hop on our train and be off. Our passes were accepted without hesitation by all rail staff for all rail lines. I kept track of the posted train fares the day before and day of travel in order to know whether or not I really did get good value from my pass. We exceeded the paid value by far and found it was well worth the hassle free travel. Of course, if you know and can plan your travel a few weeks in advance and buy your specific ticket, you may find better value fares. When you are travelling the country for 35 days, using public transit, that could be challenging. One of the ways we assured getting the best value was making our major journey of the day starting early in the morning, dropping our bags at our accomodation and then making another shorter, return trip to a nearby "must see" place. Yes, we would recommend the pass if you plan to travel a lot.

Britrail England flexipass
I purchased the flexi pass 1st class. When ordering I also got a bonus day of travel and an Oyster visitor card . The flexibility to ride any train makes travel so much easier. I can recommend East Coast Rail for travel to York. It is also very convenient that the rail pass includes use of the Heathrow and Gatwick express. I have bought these passes many times and highly recommend them.

A good deal in my situation
I decided to buy a 3-day pass. Interestingly, it was less expensive than buying a r/t train ticket from London to York. So in some cases, it can save you money. Other train routes are a relative bargain, such as going from London to Brighton, and not worth buying a pass. York is a lovely destination, by the way. I can also highly recommend Brighton or Bath as well. All are wonderful cities that have their own charm and offerings, and are fun to stroll around and explore. They are also small enough that everything is within walking distance. When deciding on whether to buy the BritRail ticket or not, I appreciated that I was easily able to reach a customer service person by phone to ask questions about how the BritRail Pass works. I do wish there were less expensive shipping options, or a way to have a ticket issued online and sent to my email, that could later be printed out and validated in a station to avoid those postage costs. Or avoid paper altogether and have an email with a scan-able code! Using the pass was easy. I did have to wait in line to have it validated, so you may have to take into account some possible queue time on the day of your travel. I liked the flexibility of using the pass. No problems using it, and for my travel routes and times, making a reservation was not necessary. So that was easy. It was a bonus to also be able to use the pass on the Heathrow Express Train. Check out the BritRail pass as an option and do the math before buying tickets for your route.

Fun and flexible way to travel!
I love travelling by train, and have used rail passes for many years. You have to work it out, as a pass may not be the cheapest way if you only have a couple of shortish trips like the reviewer below. But it's very flexible, you don't have to book a specific train time(which is the only way of getting really cheap point to point tickets) and it can pay for itself almost immediately if you want to arrive in London before 11 am as those tickets can be expensive! The trains vary in attractiveness and some companies limit wi-fi time, so there are a few variables. But there are some gorgeous train journeys and British trains run often, are fast and generally on time.

Comfort & Value
I purchased a Britrail England Flexipass before I left home. It was great to be able to use it for the Heathrow Express train as soon as I landed at the airport. The first class lounge was available at Paddington while I waited for a train to Plymouth. This was very convenient after travelling for a total of 12 hours from my home in Canada. The service on the train was great and the trip itself was smooth and quiet. My favourite ride was from Plymouth to Sheffield. This was part of the Penzance to Glasgow Cross Country service. The breakfast and lunch were tasty and ample. One day I want to do the complete journey. My wife and I usually rent a car when we visit the UK but I was on my own this time to attend a 50th reunion. The most positive thing about using the trains instead of driving is that I always arrived at my destination completely relaxed. My visit to the UK was brief, only 10 days, but I arrived home without jet lag due mostly to travelling by train in the UK instead of driving.

Go First Class in England
For Seniors, it's the best deal and experience to use a 1st Class rail pass for travelling in Europe, including Britain. We have done it many times before and look forward to our next visit. Who wants to drive a car when you can be pampered on the train in First Class?
